Federal Incentives

All federal benefits apply to entities in New York.

State Incentives

New York State Solar Energy System Equipment Credit

Homeowners can claim a tax credit equal to 25% of their solar installation costs, up to $5,000. This applies to both owned and leased systems, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) lasting at least 10 years.

Property Tax Exemption

New York offers a 15-year exemption from property taxes on the added value of solar energy systems. This means your property value increase due to solar installation won't result in higher property taxes.

Sales Tax Exemption

The state provides a 100% exemption from state sales tax (4%) and the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) tax (0.375%) on the purchase of solar equipment.

NY-Sun Megawatt Block Program

This program offers upfront rebates based on the size of the solar system installed. The rebate varies by region and is available until funding is exhausted.

Community Solar Access

For renters and those unable to install solar panels, New York's community solar programs allow participation in shared solar projects, providing bill credits for solar energy generated off-site.

Utility Incentives

Net Metering

Homeowners can receive full retail credit for excess electricity generated by their solar systems. This credit offsets future electricity bills.

Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER)

An alternative to net metering, VDER compensates solar owners based on factors like energy value, environmental value, and demand reduction.

Additional Considerations for Nonprofits

Under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022, tax-exempt organizations such as nonprofits are now eligible to receive a direct payment equal to 30% of their solar installation cost, effectively mirroring the federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC).

Summary

New York offers a combination of federal incentives, state tax credits, exemptions, and utility-level programs to make solar energy a viable and beneficial investment for individuals, businesses, and nonprofits.
